San Cristbal de las Casas is considered to be the cultural capital of the state of Chiapas. Visitors come to San Cristbal de las Casas to see the famed architecture of the San Cristbal cathedral, view the quaint Mayan villages in the surrounding mountains or for handmade textiles, jewelry and ceramics made by the indigenous people of San Cristbal. In fact, there are many who say that the most authentic crafts in Mexico are found in San Cristbal de las Casas.

Visit the open air market behind Santo Domingo church to view a large selection of handmade textiles and amber. In addition to seeing an enormous selection of authentic crafts, you’ll get a taste of what local life in San Cristbal is like.
On Calle Real de Guadalupe, you’ll find El Encuentro, a shop full of regional cultural items such as false saints, rooftop religious adornments and beautifully colored woven clothing. If rugs, furniture, or leather goods are what you are after, La Alborada, Centro Desarrollo Comunitario is the place for you. Young men and women come here to learn how to make local artisan crafts. You can purchase crafts here or even watch the students while they work.
If you visit some of these wonderful locations, you won’t be able to come home empty handed.
