San Cristbal de las Casas is one of the poorest areas of Mexico. Those who want to volunteer there need to be prepared for hard work, but also be prepared to fall in love with the people that call the area home.
People looking to volunteer should contact the NGO NATAT A.C.. Many opportunities exist to volunteer within the community. All volunteer programs are based on three main concepts. The first is solidarity, we are all one world, after all. The second is international cooperation. The third concept is sustainable development.I found some more information here.
Volunteers are needed in a wide range of activities. They can be used to teach children English as a second language, or they can be used in building new buildings to serve the community. One unique project is sustainable farming. In this project, visitors will spend six hours a day farming. Some of the activities volunteers may be engaged in are composting, worm management, planting, watering and harvesting. The seeds from this farm are saved to grow more food, while the produce is sold at a local bakery.
Volunteering helps a person feel good about themselves. The volunteer will take home many memories and a better understanding of a different culture. The local people get to meet people from around the world and get a better place to live.
