Visit the Historical City of San Cristbal de las Casas
San Cristbal de las Casas has a rich history which visitors to the city can explore.
One of the main historical attractions in the city is the Na Bolom Cultural Centre. Visitors can learn about the rain forest located here and the Lancandon Indians, who originally inhabited the area. Frans and Trudy Blom original home stands on the site and serves as the museum. Visitors are treated to a tour of the home, which has been left just the way it was when they lived there. Over 14,000 photographs were taken of life in this area, and visitors will be able to view the majority of them. 75 of the best photographs from the area are included in the book The Burden of Time. Na Bolom Cultural Centre works hard to preserve the rain forest and works closely with the area to provide an extensive range of educational programs.
Visitors will also be delighted by a visit to the Mayan Medicine Museum. Guests to the museum can learn about the many traditional beliefs held in the area. Many are demonstrated with wax figures. Mayan culture limited the practice of medicine to only very few individuals. They believed in the combination of mind, body, religion, ritual, and discipline to achieve the best remedies.
