San Cristbal de las Casas was once a quiet and eloquent Spanish village located in the state of Chiapas, Mexico. It is an arduous 18 hour bus journey south of Mexico City. Even though it is south, the town sits at a relatively high altitude providing a more temperate climate. Its unique and diverse aesthetics of a traditional Spanish town and local Indian influences, have made this town a popular tourist destination over the past 20 years.

While visiting, or living in, San Cristbal; be certain to explore everything they have to offer.I found some more information here. Two of the main attractions are the Archeological and Ethnological Museum and library. These two institutions are in dedication to the Chiapas Indians and their culture. You will gain an appreciation and understanding of the region upon visiting. Also stop at the Church of Santo Domingo. While it was built in the 16th century, its faade is of the 17th century. Not only are the visual characteristics interesting, its history is as well. The adjoined building was originally a convent, then a prison, and now a “textile co-operative”.

It must be said that this town is a rarity, and well worth a stop for a few days, or to consider as a retirement option. It is full of surprises and wonderment.
