San Cristobal de las Casas is set in a valley surrounded by hills in the central highlands of Chiapas, Mexico. The city has retained its Spanish colonial flavor with cobblestone streets, red tile roofs, wrought iron balconies and beautiful cathedrals. The city has an atavistic ambiance; donkeys ply the streets delivering milk and firewood, in the town markets or tiangas, indigenous people sell brightly dyed textiles, finely crafted ceramics and beautiful silver filigree jewelry.

Many foreigners have made their home here being attracted by the culture and quality of life and there are now a wide variety of restaurants featuring Chinese, Greek, Thai, French and Italian cuisine. Traditional fare is also widely available with tamales, quesadillas, tacos, sopas and cured meats. For the party animal visiting San Cristobal there is lively nightlife with reggae, salsa and even techno music.

Trips to the Mayan villages offer great insight into these once highly civilized people and a great opportunity to purchase unique arts and crafts. For those with an adventurous spirit, a trip down the Usamacinta river through the Lacandon jungle will thrill the traveler with memories of jungle wildlife including jaguars, caiman alligators a plethora of birdlife and hidden Mayan ruins.
